HEALTH IN MEXICO
Mexico is a healthier place to live because of the food.  Fresh fruit and vegetables are always in season and taste so much better in Mexico that you eat more of them.  In fact, unlike North American produce that is picked green and allowed to ripen in transit, Mexican produce is picked at its peak and sold in the market the very next day. Little or no preservatives are used in processed food which means you're ingesting fewer chemicals.

HEALTH CARE
Health Care can be one of our primary concerns when considering a move to Baja California.. Fortunately, you will find that in general, health care in Mexico is very good.and in many places it is excellent. Most doctors and dentists in Mexico received at least part of their training in the U.S. Many of them continue to go to the U.S. or Europe for ongoing training. Every mid-size to large city in Mexico has at least one first-rate hospital. And a big plus is that the cost of health care in Mexico is generally one-half or less what you might expect to pay in the U.S. and the same goes for prescription drugs. Prescription drugs manufactured in Mexico cost, on average, about 50 percent less than the same drugs in the U.S.

ROSARITO AND ENSENADA MEDICAL FACILITIES
In both Rosarito Beach County and Ensenada there are well-equipped medical facilities staffed with highly skilled, experienced professionals ready to deliver high quality care; most of them speak English. Prices are very reasonable as compared to those in other countries.

ALTERNATIVE HEALTH CARE
In nearly every Mexican town, you will find healers and medicine men and women (curanderos and brujos) offering natural and herbal remedies and treatments from chiropractic, Reiki and massage to homeopathy and more. In indigenous areas, shamans are the most revered of community leaders.and quite often they are willing to take on foreign clients. Mexico also has abundant natural hot springs and spas offering nutritional, relaxation and body cleansing programs and more.at a fraction of what you would pay for similar programs at home. In general, you may feel healthier living in Mexico. Fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy seafood, and most importantly.a lack of stress.may work to contribute to an overall sense of healthy well-being.

HEALTH INSURANCE IN MEXICO
One of the primary questions retirees have about Mexico is the quality of health care and insurance coverage.  Contrary to popular belief, the health care in Mexico is very good.  Many doctors have trained in the U.S. and are bilingual. It is true that Medicare and Medicaid are not accepted outside of the U.S., but many supplemental plans are accepted.  And many expatriates choose to join the MSS (Mexican Social Security) plan which costs about $225 USD a year and covers medical, dental and vision.  Regarding dental care, Americans and others have been coming to Mexico for dental procedures for years; typically, dental care in Mexico is one third the price of similar care in the United States.

CONSIDER BUYING EVACUATION INSURANCE
One additional type of coverage you may want to consider is evacuation insurance. While many hospitals and clinics in Mexico's largest cities offer excellent, up-to-date care and facilities, you may feel better knowing you can be evacuated to your own physicians in the States.

Rates vary depending on the specific benefits you choose for your policy, but as a guideline, figure on spending about $125 per year for individual, or about $250 for family coverage.

The Veteran Affairs Foreign Medical Program

The Foreign Medical Program is a healthcare benefits program for US veterans with VA-rated service-connected conditions who are residing or traveling abroad (Mexico). Under FMP, VA assumes payment responsibility for certain necessary medical services associated with the treatment of those service-connected conditions. This information is designed for veterans with VA-rated service-connected conditions who are planning to move or travel abroad. More specifically, this addresses the procedures for obtaining healthcare services for service-connected conditions while in a foreign country and how to file a claim for VA payment or reimbursement. All foreign provided services are under the jurisdiction of the Foreign Medical Program (FMP) Office in Denver, Colorado.

The FMP Office is responsible for all aspects of the program including application processing, verification of eligibility, authorization of benefits, and payment of claims. Inquiries concerning other VA matters such as compensation and pension exams and disability ratings should be directed to your servicing VA regional office (see Assistance with Other VA Issues at bottom for more information).
